Phrase

A group of notes, designated with a phrase mark (a curved line over the phrase). Play the notes within the phrase mark smoothly, and at the end of the phrase - play the last note softly and lift your hand

Two Staffs

Music for both hands often uses 2 staffs. The top is usually the right hand, the bottom staff is usually for the left hand

Bar Lines

These divide music into groups of beats called measures. The double bar line marks the end of a piece.

Legato

Play smoothly by connecting the notes. A phrase mark means you should play legato and allow the notes to flow without breaking.

Single notes played one-at-a-time

Repeated Patterns

A group of notes can form a pattern, patterns may be repeated.

Toccata

A piece with fast finger movements.

Letter Clefs

A letter at the beginning of each staff tells you the name of the starting note.

Polka

A fast dance with many turns and skips.

Interval 3rds

Movement from a line to a line (skips), or from a space to a space (skips). Movement that skips a letter name. Movement that skips a finger (1 --> 3)

Repeat Sign

Go back to the beginning and play through to the repeat sign again

Melodic 3rd

Single notes played one-at-a-time, with an interval of a 3rd, such as C and E.
